Solar Panel Roof System Operating at High School

BUFFALO, NY — Thanks to the help of a New York State grant, St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute has flipped the switch on a 108-panel solar rooftop system.

The green initiative will save St. Joe’s at least $3,000 in the first year and as much as $113,500 over a period of 25 years.

“We’re teaching our students to use math and science to answer questions about our world, such as the importance of preservation,” said Robert Scott, the president of St. Joe’s, in a statement.

Students in an environmental science class will also begin looking at other ways the school can reduce its carbon footprint. Solar Liberty of Buffalo, which installed the panels, is currently putting a similar system in place at the University at Buffalo’s North Campus.
