Firm that did city work gets state solar energy award
BUFFALO, NY — Buffalo-based Solar Liberty, which has installed solar on City Hall, Kennedy Arena and the Fort Stanwix parking garage, has been recognized as the largest solar installation company in the state by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Department of Energy based on the number of systems installed and kilowatt capacity brought online in 2011.
NYSERDA officials presented the “Outstanding Achievement” award to Solar Liberty’s president, Adam Rizzo, in Saratoga Springs at the 2012 ACI New York Energy Star Conference. The award recognized the company that has completed the most PV installations and installed the most kilowatts (kW) of PV capacity during 2011.
It installed 111 systems for a total of 1.896 MW.
A company spokeswoman noted that it also handled installations for towns, municipalities and schools received funding directly from NYSERDA so the amount of solar energy the firm installed is 4.2MW.
The firm also has offices in Syracuse. The map on its website shows solar installations near Chittenango and Hamilton.
With large-scale projects like the ground-mounted photovoltaic system installed by Solar Liberty at SUNY Buffalo’s North Campus, Western New York is fast becoming the leader in the use of solar and other renewable energy sources, company officials said.
“We are excited with the future of renewable energy, and what it means for our company, the jobs it continues to create, and the people of New York,” Rizzo said.
Founded in 2003, the company installs grid-tied photovoltaic solar energy systems. It works closely with the Solar Liberty Foundation (www.solarliberty.org) whose mission is to provide renewable energy resources to people in rural areas of less developed nations.
The Radiant Store in Malta received the “Outstanding Achievement” award in NYSERDA’s Solar Thermal Program for the most Solar Thermal installations and displacing the largest number of kilowatt hours of electricity for water heating. Since the Solar Thermal Program’s inception in November 2010, The Radiant Store has installed 50 systems, which have displaced 264,001 kWh of electricity.
