Solar Installation Estimated to Save Taxpayers $7.3 million over 20 years

Dr. Joe Carbone, County Legislator

In the coming weeks, I look forward to voting on an agreement that will make way for solar energy generation right here in Monroe County. For many years, Monroe County has consistently demonstrated a commitment to green energy, and this project continues that tradition in a responsible way. The installations will be built, maintained and paid for entirely by Solar Liberty, requiring no financial contribution from the County.

This agreement is a positive development for two main reasons: the first is that Monroe County is estimated to save $366,000 each year by buying energy and re-selling it to the local power grid. Over the course of the 20 year agreement, over $7.3 million in tax dollars will be saved as a result. As a County Legislator, my top priority is to manage tax dollars in a responsible manner, and this agreement is an excellent opportunity to do so.

The second reason is that in addition to protecting taxpayers, this agreement helps Monroe County to be good stewards of our environment. Solar energy is one of the safest and cleanest forms of energy.

The solar panels arrays will be installed in two locations. One, adjacent to the closed Gloria Drive Landfill in Penfield, will produce 4 mega-watts of power and the other, adjacent to the Northwest Quadrant Treatment Plant in Greece, will produce 7 mega-watts of power. Both sites were selected to yield the best solar power results, but minimize visual impact to the community.

I am proud to represent the Irondequoit community in the County Legislature. If there is ever anything you would like to share with me, or if there is something I can help with, please feel free to contact me by phone at 753-1922 or by email at monroe16@monroecounty.gov.
