As SUNY New Paltz prepares to flip the switch on a state-of-the-art photovoltaic array and battery storage system, Solar Liberty, who developed and installed the system, will visit campus and offer an open house for members of the campus community interested in learning more about this exciting project.

Representatives from Solar Liberty will be on campus on Monday, July 17, from 6 – 8 p.m., to give a project overview in the College Terrace, and then a tour of the storage system in the Elting Gymnasium. The event will be catered; registration is free on a first-come, first serve basis.

To register, please call 866-80 RENEW or email RSVP@solarliberty.com.

The SUNY New Paltz Microgrid Project comes to campus with support from the New York Power Authority (NYPA), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Central Hudson Gas & Electric.

It is the first of its kind in New York State, and expands both the College’s ability to generate green energy (with more than 200 kilowatts of solar panels installed on the Elting Gymnasium and Sojourner Truth Library rooftops), and its ability to store that energy for use in times of emergency or peak demand.

It will reduce campus energy usage and costs and establish a reliable back-up energy source that could help keep students and faculty safe should an emergency situation occur.

It will also offer a valuable research sample for evaluators at the NYPA, NYSERDA and the EPRI, who will study the impact of the system on the College’s energy economy to assess its technical and economic benefits.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on campus in October to officially unveil the project.
