After years of discussion and a failed contract, solar power is finally coming to the Town of Tonawanda.

The town board approved an agreement to bring solar power to the masses Monday night.

Amherst-based Solar Liberty will install a solar array with nearly 8,000 panels at the town’s former landfill north of the 290.

This comes after Tesla backed out of a previous deal to install the panels earlier this year.

Under the new agreement with Solar Liberty, the town will not pay anything toward the $4 million construction.

In return, the town will get a discount on the energy it buys for the next 20 years.

Officials said the move will save the town around $183,000 a year.

“First of all, we have an eye sore. We have a landfill and it’s going to be able to be re-purposed for a purposeful use rather than sitting there,” said Town of Tonawanda Councilmember William Conrad. “The second thing, of course, is we’re entering into the grid clean energy rather than a fossil fuel source and we’re able to produce energy using the sun’s rays and just benefit the overall environment and climate.”

Construction on the project is set to begin in spring of next year.
