What Happens after my solar system is installed?

Once your solar panel installation is complete, your system isn’t quite ready to go live just yet. A series of inspections and approvals takes place first to ensure everything is safe, meets local building codes, and functions properly before your panels start producing energy.

Here’s exactly what to expect during the post-installation process.

Post-Installation Inspections

Electrical Inspection

After installation, a final electrical inspection is scheduled to confirm that all electrical work was completed correctly and safely. A certified inspector will review your system, including the panels, breakers, and how everything connects to your home’s electrical infrastructure. This assures the homeowner that the system is ready to safely start producing solar energy.

Building Inspection

Your local town building department will send an inspector to evaluate the installation against local building codes and standards. The building inspector will assess the quality of the installation and review any structural changes made to your property during the process.

Utility Inspection

Your local utility provider will then verify that your solar system meets New York State standards and interconnection requirements before approving the grid connection.

Meter Swap

Once your utility approves your net metering application, your electric meter will be swapped for a bidirectional net meter that measures energy flowing both to and from your home. This meter swap typically happens within 2–4 weeks of approval and can occur before or after your solar panels are installed.

Net metering ensures that you receive the proper credit for the energy your system exports to the grid.

Permission to Operate

After all inspections and approvals are complete, your utility company will issue an official Permission to Operate (PTO) letter. Once you receive PTO, your solar installer can safely activate your system, and your panels can officially begin producing clean energy.

System Monitoring

When your solar system is up and running, your inverter will connect to your home’s Wi-Fi network. This connection enables real-time production data to be sent to an online monitoring portal, where you can track:

  • Daily and cumulative energy production
  • Long-term performance trends
  • System health and efficiency

Wi-Fi connectivity also allows your solar installer to remotely monitor your system, helping catch and resolve potential issues quickly.

Enjoy the benefits of your new system

Going solar offers homeowners both financial and environmental benefits.

Lower Electricity Bills

By generating your own power, you reduce your dependence on the traditional grid. This leads to lower monthly electric bills and greater protection against rising utility rates.

A Smaller Carbon Footprint

Solar energy is a clean, renewable resource. By choosing solar, homeowners reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower their carbon footprint, and support a more sustainable future.
