Merchants Insurance Takes Green Initiative
BUFFALO, NY – Merchants Insurance Group, a founding investor in BNE, began the installation of roof top solar panels this week at their corporate headquarters at 250 Main Street in downtown Buffalo. Solar Liberty, a Buffalo-based company that specializes in renewable energy systems, has been working with Merchants on the design and installation of the 31,500 watt solar electric generating system. When completed, 150 panels will sit atop the roof of the building. Our partners and colleagues at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) also assisted Merchants on this project.
The impetus behind the green effort came from Merchants President & CEO Robert Zak who asked company officials to explore ways to make the building greener while replacing the buildings roof. The result is a system that over the next 25 years will reduce the company’s carbon footprint by eliminating 495 tons of CO2.
Congratulations to Bob Zak and everyone at Merchants for their commitment to going green with this first of its kind roof-top solar energy system in downtown Buffalo.
